Currently Reading: A Marvellous Light, by Freya Marske
Queer! Edwardian! Fantasy! (and, I hope, romance?)
Hi, friends,
I picked this one up last night, and now it looks like I’ll be getting nothing done until I finish it? Good thing that I’ve got Mondays off.
The light was turning towards dusk and there was barely a breath of breeze to stir the leaves. Birds yelled from the hedges and bushes as they walked.
“So much for the quiet of the countryside,” said Robin. “Looks like a pastoral scene by any artist from the past two centuries; sounds like a fish market.”
—A Marvellous Light, by Freya Marske
This quote doesn’t feature any of the actual fantasy elements of the book—or the romantical ones—but it accurately describes what we wake up to every single morning, so it made me laugh and laugh.
If you’re so inclined, let me know what you’re reading!
Talk soon,
Leila
HA! I just read this one, too! I picked it up because PRETTY FOIL TITLE (it really doesn't take much sometimes) and I do so love a "WOW, MAGIC EXISTS!?" novel - and it's even better since it was a Being Snotty and Mean kind of mistake that worked out well.
And yes: birds yelling. It's... really a thing. We sleep with the windows open as much as we can, and BOY you can tell when spring/summer really gets going, as you blearily scowl and mutter, "What the actual heck, bird?" as they start hollering about "that's my worm, come have sex with me look at my pretty feathers I have an egg where are you Bob" at O-dark-hundred. Birds are kind of a lot.
