DYING!!! I haven't thought about Victor/Victoria in ages. I used to watch random double features on a local TV channel with my Mom on Sunday afternoons - usually westerns - but sometimes the second feature was a weirder one (The original 1930's SINBAD, for instance). She never stayed awake past the first one (HAH) so I remember watching V/V alone, wholly bewildered as to how anyone could image Julie Andrews was male. (This was before I realized Boy George WASN'T FEMALE. I had a difficult time with the whole gender thing, CLEARLY.)

These actors/actresses were such fixtures of the 80's, then they just vanished. James Garner was in EVERYTHING. Sheesh.

I never watched the Duvall fairytales at all - my parents were completely anti-fantasy. Which explains a lot of my reading... I'm glad it's not gone, though! YouTube has started being my go-to place to find a lot of old stuff that I get a kick out of seeing again.

I feel like I don't know Garner from ANYTHING, even though I immediately recognize him??

I watched tons and tons of old movies growing up, some on PBS or AMC (when it was still old movies, and when we had cable, which was kind of on and off), some rented on VHS.

We subscribe to probably more streaming services than we should, but truly, shelling out for the Criterion Channel was one of my best life choices ever. EVER! The only thing I've ever really missed about living in the city was going to double features at the Brattle in Harvard Square, and having Criterion feels a lot like that. (Also, totallyyyyyyy on YouTube for weird older movies that are out of print; I use it for old made-for-tv horror, heh.)

Oh, and the Duvall Faerie Tale Theatre series, if you haven't watched it, is totally worth it—for the absolutely amazing casting alone, I'm not sure if she called in favors or if all of those folks were like, "OMG SHELLEY OBVIOUSLY YES WE WANT TO WORK WITH YOU PLEASE CAST US. WE WILL LITERALLY WORK FOR PEANUTS WE KNOW THERE IS NO ACTUAL BUDGET." (Some hold up better than others, but you know, the 80s.)

WOW, this is my brain on the 80's: I just realized I mixed up James Garner with Robert Conrad, the dude in the original Wild, Wild West series. That was PRIME (rerun) watching Sunday afternoons (as was Mission Impossible, of course). It was my MOM who loved James Garner because of The Rockford Files (?) which I never even saw, but was her jam before Hart to Hart and Scarecrow & Mrs. King (hee hee HEEE!). I inherited my mother's terrible taste in spy/detective TV, FOR SURE. Also: in more news, I am NOT too ashamed of my bad taste to dig these shows up and watch them again...☺

If it makes you feel any better, when I originally logged this one on Letterboxd, I referred to James Garner as Robert Wagner?? Who is obviously ALSO an entirely different person??

I've never seen Rockford Files either, but I feel like it's streaming for free somewhere? If I ever pry myself away from Columbo, I should try it. I've never watched Scarecrow & Mrs King, either, even though I have a VERY soft spot for Bruce Boxleitner (bc Babylon 5) and obviously for Kate Jackson (bc obviously). I love all of that stuff, too.

LOL... it's the lookalike factor. These guys are all Leading Man types, square jaw, artfully tousled hair. I likely couldn't tell Robert Wagner from Robert Conrad either. Oy.

Of course, this era with its Abundance of Christophers is just as bad, so I cannot cast too many aspersions...
